Try eco orienteering

Eco orienteering is an exciting mix of map-reading, nature discovery, and mini adventure, all rolled into one. Start by creating a simple map of your garden, park, or local green space, and mark out a few checkpoints for your child to find. At each stop, you can add a nature-themed challenge: spot three different leaves, listen for a bird call, find something soft, or pick up a piece of litter.

Give them a compass if you have one, or just let them follow clues and directions. It’s a fantastic way to build navigation skills, boost confidence, and encourage children to really explore their surroundings. Plus, the eco twist gets them thinking about wildlife, habitats, and caring for the environment as they go.

Whether it’s a timed race or a relaxed ramble, the fun is in the journey, and the joy of being nature’s explorer for the day.
