Go bird watching

Bird watching is a peaceful yet exciting way for children to connect with nature, because you never quite know who’ll show up! Whether you’re in a park, garden, woodland or even looking out of a window, birds are all around once you start to notice them. Bring along a pair of binoculars if you have them, or just use your eyes and ears, listening for songs, spotting movement in trees, or watching birds swoop and perch.

You can turn it into a game: how many different colours can you spot? Can you find one with a red chest or a long tail? Use a simple bird guide or app to help identify what you see, and soon your child will be proudly pointing out robins, blackbirds, or blue tits like a little expert.

It’s a great way to build observation skills and patience, and also opens the door to big ideas like migration, nesting, and habitat protection. Plus, there’s something really special about sharing a quiet moment watching a wild creature just doing its thing.
