Go bug hunting
Bug hunting is one of those gloriously simple activities that turns any patch of grass, woodland, or garden into a mini safari. All you need is a magnifying glass (if you have one), a jam jar or bug pot (with air holes), and a curious pair of eyes.
Children love the thrill of the search: lifting stones, peeking under logs, or gently shaking leaves over a white sheet to see what wriggles out. Along the way, they’ll meet beetles, woodlice, ants, and all sorts of fascinating mini-beasts, learning that even the tiniest creatures have a role to play in nature. It’s a brilliant way to encourage observation skills, patience, and empathy for the natural world. And best of all, it gets children on their hands and knees, properly immersed in their surroundings.
Just remember to return any creatures safely to where you found them, it’s a lovely early lesson in respect and care for wildlife.
