Go pond dipping

Pond dipping is like a real-life nature mystery, what creatures are hiding beneath the surface today? All you need is a net, a clear container or tray, and maybe a spoon for gentle transfers. Just scoop from the edges of a pond (where most of the action is) and let your child peer in to see what’s wriggling about, water boatmen, tadpoles, snails, even tiny dragonfly nymphs!

It’s a brilliant way to explore a whole hidden world and introduces children to the idea of freshwater habitats and life cycles. There’s something magical about discovering how much life exists in just a scoop of water, and it’s a lovely chance to practise gentle handling and respect for wildlife.

It’s peaceful, exciting, and a perfect mix of science and wonder. Just remember to return everything to the pond when you’re done, it's their home, after all!
