Nature news

November days can start to feel wintery and there’s a real chill to the air… There’s no denying that winter is on the way!

This is the month to spot foxes and badgers, whilst smaller mammals such as voles, bats, wood mice and squirrels are busy gathering food for the winter. You might be lucky to spot a hedgehog looking for a cosy spot to hibernate… perhaps you could lend them a hand.

November is also a busy month for animal shelters who are swamped with baby hedgehogs, born too late to hibernate. Remember this month to check under any piles of leaves and garden waste before you have a bonfire, these spots are often home to local hedgehogs!

Food in season

As the evenings get darker and the weather gets a little chiller, we all enjoy tucking into warming dishes. Tasty root vegetables are abundant in November and are the perfect ingredients for soups, stews and bakes.

Apples, carrots, cabbages, cauliflower, kale, leeks, parsnips, pears and potatoes

If you’re a keen gardener, then these are the crops to be planting this month; broad beans, salad leaves, spring onions, chillies, apples, pears, cherries, blackcurrants, gooseberries and raspberries.
